While the stock prices of most companies in most industries are losing ground, education stocks are looking good.
A recent article in Fortune magazine speculates that a 7.2% unemployment rate may be prompting more people to return to school for retraining.
The magazine also reports that the economic stimulus bill recently passed by Congress "would increase federal student loan limits -- the major source of tuition payments for students at for-profit schools."
"If (education) isn't the best area given the current economic environment, it's certainly one of the best," Ed Nicklin, co-manager of Westport Select-Cap fund, which had holdings in for-profit schools, told Fortune.
The market conditions have allowed private schools, particularly online schools with lower operational costs, to attract students who are looking to earn an associate degree, for example.
These market conditions also mean that students looking to enroll in an online career training program should understand they are in a "buyer's market," and should do their research and investigate schools before deciding where to enroll.
While there may be no connection between a high tuition price and an excellent education, students should also be wary of tuition prices that seem unreasonably low. Potential students should be sure to bookmark some of their favorite school's website and check them on a regular basis for specials.
Private vocational schools often have special offers, allowing students to enroll in career training programs at a considerable discount. Students can also request more information from a school, which usually means they will also receive emails announcing special offers on course enrollments.
Students not having any additional training beyond high school can enroll in a vocational career training program online, which may only take months to complete, instead of years.
Career training graduates often receive a certificate that demonstrates proficiency in a particular field. In other cases, students use the career training program as a springboard for passing the state exam and earning state certification in their new field.
If you want to become a real estate agent, for example, you can enroll in an online real estate license program that will help you prepare for the real estate exam in your particular state.
While a real estate career can be an end in itself, many people have ambitions to get their associate degree and eventually their bachelor's degree also. In this case, one can look at online schools that offer vocational certificate programs, along with associate and bachelor's degree programs.
Many schools that offer a range of both vocational and degree programs, would love to have students enter at the certificate level and stay with the school all the way through their degree program. When students speak with a school's admissions representative, they should be sure to ask about the school's full-range of educational programs.
In the end, these difficult economic times are an opportunity for schools, but more importantly they are an opportunity for men and women who are looking to enhance their education without breaking the bank to do it.Labels: become a real estate agent, online real estate license program, online schools, private schools, training beyond high school, Training Schools
