Medical Terminology Course

Successful coding starts by establishing a strong foundation in advanced medical terminology. This medical coding online course will allow you to obtain a comprehensive understanding of various body systems. Learn to recognize word structure and abbreviations and decipher a word based on its root word, suffix and prefix.

Course Overview

Medical Terminology orients students to the accurate uses, definitions, spellings, and pronunciations of medical terms used in the healthcare field. Students will analyze terms while learning to divide them into suffixes, prefixes, and combining forms. Emphasis will be placed on relating medical terms to the structural organization of the body. Through practical applications, students will learn to link abnormal conditions and diseases with diagnostic tests and procedures. In addition, students will be introduced to common medical abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols.

 

Course Objectives

  1. Define and spell common medical terms, abbreviations, and acronyms, including those related to organs and tissues of the body, and pathological conditions and diseases
  2. Divide medical terms into component parts and identify the common suffixes, prefixes, and combining forms that comprise those terms
  3. Recall the body systems, their functions, the body cavities, and major organs within each cavity
  4. Identify planes and directional terms of the body and the divisions of the spinal column
  5. Distinguish between medical specialists and their specialties, and recall the training process for physicians
  6. Recognize medical terms used in case reports and how to apply them in real-life situations
  7. Recall how to analyze, pronounce, and spell pathologic, diagnostic, and treatment terms related to each of the body systems covered in this module

Anatomy & Physiology Course

U.S. Health care is undergoing tremendous changes that will affect every medical professional, These changes include the transition to electronic health records (EHR) and implementation of the new ICD-10 coding system to replace the outdated ICD-9 coding system. Now more than ever, medical professionals will need the skill sets to interpret a vast medical vocabulary.  Therefore, during this comprehensive, state-of-the-art A&P course, students will learn the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of each body system so that they will be prepared for the magnitude of changes ahead.

Course Overview

Anatomy and Physiology will prepare students for the specificity required to interpret medical language while working as a healthcare professional. Students will acquire an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and laboratory medicine. The student will learn how to identify, pronounce, spell, locate, and understand anatomical terminology to describe the structure and function of the body, the major organ systems, and the relations of one part to another. The nature of disease processes, including signs, symptoms, and etiology, will be presented in detail for each organ system. Interventional treatment modalities have been linked accordingly, in addition to clinical applications, research issues and trends, and related issues about health and well-being.

  1. Recall the structural foundation of the body, basic chemistry, and various chemicals that comprise the human body
  2. Identify the structural and functional aspects of cell organization and the various types of tissues that compose the body’s organs
  3. Recognize the anatomy and organization of the body, disease terminology, and patterns of disease
  4. Specify the function and structure of the integumentary system and the various types of epithelial and connective tissue body membranes
  5. Name the functions and recognize the structure of the skeletal and muscular systems
  6. Identify the organs, divisions, and functions of the nervous system
  7. Distinguish between special and general sense organs and recognize the structure and anatomy of the eyes and ears
  8. Name the functions of the endocrine glands, hormones they secrete, and important roles that hormones play in homeostasis, normalcy, and abnormalities
  9. Recall the primary functions of blood and the heart and their associated disorders and abnormalities
  10. Identify the structures, functions, and deficiencies of the lymphatic system, as well as types of immunity
  11. Specify the structure and generalized functions of the respiratory system as well as the disorders of the upper respiratory tract
  12. Recognize the component parts of the digestive system and the basic principles of nutrition and metabolism
  13. Identify the major organs and functions of the urinary system and mechanisms that maintain fluid balance
  14. Recall the essential and accessory organs, functions of each, and the structures of external male and female genitals of the male and female reproductive systems

Course Overview

The Medical Coding course focuses on learning the coding rules for the ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and Level II (HCPCS) coding systems and then applying these rules to code patient medical services. Allied Professional Healthcare School’s Medical Coding course will prepare students to apply the science knowledge base they acquired in the Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology courses to the process of code selection. Students will learn how to use the 2015 ICD-9-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding manuals through hundreds of practical exercises and case studies. Additionally, they will learn how to use the ICD-10-CM Draft through various applications, learn the history of ICD-10 coding, and when adoption of this code set will take place. Emphasis in this course will be placed on the coding guidelines and the official rules established for the use of the standard code sets in different health care settings. Allied Professional Healthcare School’s Medical Coding course will introduce students to coding organizations, such as the AAPC and AHIMA, and the certification exams each organization offers.   2. Recognize the reimbursement, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and compliance processes
  3. Recall the history and purpose of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revisions, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)
  4. Differentiate among the coding guidelines

  6. Use the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification coding system to assign diagnosis codes by body systems
